4.1 STANDARD FORM CATEGORICAL PROPOSITIONS

All S are P means nothing can exist in area 1. Shade out area 1. Some S are P means there is at least 1 S, and it's in area 2. No S are P means no S are in area 2; shade out 2. Some S are not P means there is at least one S, and it is in area 1. Put an X in area 1.

Notes:


1. Some means at least one.

2. The copula links or couples the subject term with the predicate term.

3. There are other copulas that we don't use: is, is not, will, will not, etc..

4. The I and O propositions have existential import for Aristotle and Boole.

5. The A and E propositions have existential import for Aristotle - but not for Boole.
