I like nature and the humanities. I’ve always
lived by nature. My parents’ house faced the
Niagara Falls gorge. A short jog down the hill
brings you to Whirlpool State Park.
The Metro Parks is in my backyard. Humming
birds, buzzards, and a family of raccoons live
there. The house is covered with Grape and
wisteria vines. When the grapes mature, raccoons
will be crawling all over the house, and keeping
me up at night. They’re cute, inquisitive,
smart, and like to cause trouble. I almost
forgot a skunk lives there as well, so you’re
lucky this is an online class.
Down the hill, in the Metro Parks, there’s a
wetland. It boasts birds like: blue and green
herrings, buzzards, owls, hawks, falcons, and
believe it or not a bald eagle. Some of these
birds have the wingspan of a small car. My
favorite critters are the wildlife photographers
that frequent the spot.
Teaching Intro to Humanities has sparked a
renewed interest for me. I studied art, music,
and philosophy in college. The book has really
got me thinking about art in new ways. Students
are also a source of inspiration. Teaching is
the best way to learn because you have to
explain things, and there is an interaction – a
collaborative effort. I learn a lot from
students. Currently I’m learning how to use
Reason (recording studio software) from one of
my past students. For me learning is a social
activity, and I encourage all of you to advance
ideas, and argue for and against different
positions.
